Starvmount DC2DC 12-48V 240W Power Supply Usage Guide
A high-quality DC-to-DC power supply designed for 12V DC systems, stepping up to 48V with a maximum power output of 240W.
Ideal for Various Starlink™ DC Power Setups:
- Starlink™ MINI: When combined with a DC barrel socket, this provides an optimal DC power supply solution.
- Starlink™ with Standard Router: When used with both a DC barrel socket and a Starlink™ Router/Mini DC Power Cable (2m), this setup delivers an efficient DC power solution.
- Starlink™ Standard: When combined with Passive PoE, this provides reliable power delivery.
Power Requirements
The DC2DC is designed for use with 12V systems. To power Starlink™, your power source must have sufficient capacity and quality. It is recommended to use a 200Ah or larger lithium leisure battery to ensure stable operation.
The purpose of using the DC2DC is to maximize efficiency by eliminating inverter losses. It assumes your system is capable of powering an inverter, which would also make it suitable for powering Starlink over extended periods.
While the DC2DC does not reduce Starlink’s power consumption, it improves efficiency by eliminating unnecessary DC-to-AC and AC-to-DC power conversion. Therefore, it is not a solution for running Starlink™ on smaller DC power systems.
Cable & Fuse Selection
The cable size and fuse rating must be selected based on the DC2DC application. Use the provided table to determine the appropriate cable and fuse size.
Scenario | Cable Length (m) | Fuse Size (A) | Required Cable Cross-Section (mm²) | Recommended AWG Size |
---|---|---|---|---|
Starlink™ MINI (60W) | 1 | 7.5 | 1.5mm² | 16 AWG |
2 | 7.5 | 2.5mm² | 14 AWG | |
4 | 7.5 | 2.5mm² | 14 AWG | |
Starlink™ Standard (140W) | 1 | 15 | 1.5mm² | 16 AWG |
2 | 15 | 2.5mm² | 14 AWG | |
4 | 15 | 2.5mm² | 14 AWG | |
High Power Usage 220W | 1 | 25 | 2.5mm² | 14 AWG |
2 | 25 | 4.0mm² | 12 AWG | |
4 | 25 | 6.0mm² | 10 AWG |
General recommendations:
- The power input cable should be kept as short as possible to minimize resistance, improve efficiency, and ensure safety.
- See the Power Switch section for advice on convenient switching without increasing input power cable length.
Screw Terminal Connection
For secure and reliable connections, we recommend using:
- 2-Core Thinwall Auto Cable (a stranded DC cable)
- Non-insulated ferrules
Installation Guide:
- Insert the ferrule correctly: The ferrule must be positioned above the bar visible inside the screw terminal.
- Prepare the terminal: Loosen the screw terminal, then push the screw down until the bar moves to the bottom of the terminal hole.
- Secure the connection: Insert the ferrule and cable above the bar and tighten the screw firmly.
- Verify the connection: If the ferrule/cable is not secured when tightening, it was not inserted above the bar correctly.
Moisture-Resistant Grommet
The DC2DC screw terminal is supplied with a moisture-resistant grommet, which covers the screw terminals and seals the terminal hole.
Usage Notes:
- The grommet should only be used if there is a risk of moisture exposure.
- It provides moisture resistance but is not fully waterproof.
Power Switch
Starlink™ continuously consumes power, even when not in use. To prevent unnecessary power drain, it is recommended to install a switch to turn off Starlink™ when not needed (e.g., at night, while driving, or when away).
Switching Options:
- For basic setups, install the switch near the DC2DC unit.
- For more convenient switching locations (without excessive cable runs), use a relay to control power to the DC2DC without extending the power cable.
CAUTION
When fitting, undertake your own risk assessment regarding placement and attachment. Always be considerate of others and your own safety.
